Information is your right, you shall have it

Posted by in India/Kerala, Society

Right to Information Act has come into force in India as of 12 October 2005. This should lead to some interseting developments if Citizens decide to use it in a positive manner. Few months back one of Asha Munich volunteers who had shifted to Delhi used this Act to ask for information on some road development work near Noida. The response was quite interesting and led to changes. (An article came in the 15 August 2005 issue of Outlook India.) I am looking forward to see how we will use…read more

Mumbai to Delhi: 3 hours by train?

Posted by in India/Kerala, Society

Just read this amazing news on ExpressIndia.com with an expected cost of USD 30 billions. Yes I know Indian economy is growing, and dreaming high is a good thing – but when I hear such proposals – invariably from NRIs, it leaves me but wondering do we have any idea where we are going to. Sometimes I get the feel that some NRIs and even RIs get so heady in their initial success that they think anything and everything is possible. I am reminded of some of the many overhyped…read more

Ferrari Taxi in Trivandrum, Kerala, India

Posted by in India/Kerala

Ferrari Taxi in Trivandrum, Kerala, India This is amazing to see a Ferrari as a taxi in capital city of Kerala state in India – Thiruvananthapuram. I don’t know the history behind it – but I am guessing that most probably this must have been won as a lottery prize in UAE. I wonder how many people can travel in this car though – and where does one put the luggage?

Munjal’s great management lessons

Posted by in India/Kerala, Management

Hero group: Hero cylces, Hero Honda and so on has had a lasting impression on me – not least because I grew up partly in Ludhiana, the home of Hero group, but also I had the opportunity to meet some of the members of the Munjal family while there – the days that perhaps formed my mind to get into Management. I was still a school student then. I was reminded of those days when I read this article in Rediff.com about Brij Mohanlall Munjal the head of the Hero family….read more

A rather elaborate house boat – from Kerala

Posted by in India/Kerala

house boat angled view It is amazing how far this new industry in Kerala has come in the past few years. Hand built – and started by a smart guy who saw the gap left by the houseboats Srinagar, J&K – today they have reached such amazing sophistication while still keeping the Kerala flavour. I certainly would like to spend few days on one of these sometime soon. I just wonder what have they come up with to take care http://cialis-canadapharmacy.com/ \ how does work viagra \ generic cialis \…read more

UN reports huge gender gap in education

Posted by in India/Kerala

A new United Nations reports shows a majority of the 115 million children worldwide who are excluded from receiving an education are girls. Afghanistan and Pakistan are the two countries with the widest gender gaps in education. The Progress for Children report states that barriers to achieving gender parity in education include poverty, HIV/AIDS and conflict. Though the report shows that more children are attending school overall, a quantum leap and an extra $5.6 billion a year in aid are needed to reach the Millennium Development Goal of achieving universal…read more

Microfinance/Microcredit – becoming profitable?

Posted by in India/Kerala

Surya points out that 2005 is the year of Microcredit. It is an interesting concept and I agree with her that this is going to be a big thing and will have a big impact in the future especially of Africa. We in India have had microfinance/microcredit in some form or the other for ages in the form of local money lenders and also the local cooperative banks along with what is known as chitti funds in Kerala (I am sure such schemes exists in other parts of India as…read more
