Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci

Posted by in Random Thoughts, Technology

I have always wanted to lay my hands on the Notebooks of Leanardo Da Vinci. Searching for it few years back I ended up buying Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown – it was still in hardcover edition – and not famous – and I thought it was some work on the real Da Vinci codes. Anyway no regrets – Dan Brown’s book was a great read and I enjoyed it (though I liked his Angels and Demons more than Da Vinci Code) – especially since Out the wont: and….read more

Google Maps & Map of Switzerland

Posted by in Technology

Google Maps is another interesting product from Google – again what attracts me most is their user interface – so much uncluttered – compared to perhaps somewhat more practically useful Yahoo Maps. Anyway, since they are currently mostly US centric – I can’t comment much on their usefulness. What I find rather interesting is what now is happening with sites like Google Sightseeing. Soon we will have interesting sightseeing programs of key sites around the world. Let me start that concept by using another tool – very similar to Google…read more

Podcasting – Kerala style

Posted by in India/Kerala, Technology

Podcasting is the lastest happening. And as can be expected its happening in Kerala – though in its own style. A Malappuram based journalist has started Times News – a daily 30 minute news service distributed via audio cassettes and played around the district in shops, busses and even movie halls. Advertisers are happy too – so possibily this service will sustain if they can maintain quality. I hope he will soon put it online so that Malayalees around the world can catch up on local news. Learning from real life – presentation by CTO of Amazon.com at Bangalore India

Posted by in Management, Technology

I came across this rather long presentation by Werner Vogels, CTO of Amazon.com that he made to Amazon India development centre last month (March 2005). First part of the presentation presents some interesting facts about Amazon’s activities and their products. Good general knowledge. But what I found even mroe interesting is the second part of his presentation, slides 27 onwards. He talks about organisational systems and how we can learn from various real life (read biological) systems. In summary he talks about questioning our assumptions, learning from real life, letting…read more

First Confirmed Picture of a Planet Beyond the Solar System

Posted by in Photos, Technology

Space.com reports the first photograph of a confirmed planet outside our solar system. The photograph shows the young star – supposed to be similar to our Sun and the planet itself. I think there is still some doubts about the size and mass of the planet – currently speculated to be 2 or 3 times as big as Jupiter. The discovery and photographs were made by astronomers at the European Southern Observatory in Chile.

The rat and the butterfly – A fable of software development

Posted by in Random Thoughts, Technology

I came across this story by John Walker, the founder of Autodesk (coinhabitant of Switzerland) – he is talking about overdose of idealism and quest for purity that very often ensnares the open source projects and often leads to their death. I personally think that Open Source is perhaps a good way for developing concepts but for application to real life situations – it has to be properly – for the lack of any other appropriate word coming to my mind – commercialised. Read on: Once upon a time, a…read more
