iTunes now with Podcasting

Posted by in Technology

Apple has just released iTunes 4.9 with support for Podcasting. And even more amazing is that the iTunes music store now has a huge collection of podcasts. I am just now listening to an interesting piece on employee management, an interview with the author of the book The Enthusiastic Employee, David Sirota. This should be very interesting. To subscribe to these podcasts and listen to them on my way to work. While I don’t plan to make my own podcasts, its now incredibly easy to add ones own podcasts to…read more

Posted by in Random Thoughts

Just heard this on BBC News – that 52 billion animals are killed every year – thats a billion a week – for feeding 6 billion human beings! And even more interesting that most of these billions doesn’t even see sun light as they are bred on industrial scale! They were talking about some recent research done at University of Cambridge about feelings of animals. It seems finally they have proof that animals does have feelings. Now anyone who has ever lived in a farm or have talked to people…read more

Munjal’s great management lessons

Posted by in India/Kerala, Management

Hero group: Hero cylces, Hero Honda and so on has had a lasting impression on me – not least because I grew up partly in Ludhiana, the home of Hero group, but also I had the opportunity to meet some of the members of the Munjal family while there – the days that perhaps formed my mind to get into Management. I was still a school student then. I was reminded of those days when I read this article in Rediff.com about Brij Mohanlall Munjal the head of the Hero family….read more

Art Basel is one of the world’s biggest art shows held every year at the huge exhibition hall just across the street from where my office is. It started today and will go on till 20 June. There are over 250 galleries participating this year – I think 270, which were selected from over 800 galleries who applied for a spot. There are galleries from US, Germany, France, Italy, UK and of course Switzerland along with galleries from around the world. I still haven’t figured out who are the buyers…read more

Book review: An interesting perspective on the emerging economic scenario

Posted by in Management

The only sustainable edge: Why business strategy depends on productive friction and dynamic specialisaion John Hagel III, John Seely Brown Harvard University Press, May 2005 Despite the rather long winding title/subtitle – I think this is an interesting book that talks about the impact of new technologies and of the emergence of the low-cost economies on management of the supply chain. Its perhaps just a coincidence that this book was published just prior to the announcement by Apple of their move from IBM-PowerPC to Intel chips. This book covers some…read more

A misleading obsession with share prices

Posted by in Management

I have been of the opinion that a total obsession with share price – and the associated view of maximisation of shareholder value is eroding the western economy faster than any other cause. One of the first lessons I learnt when I joined for my MBA was that good profits is a natural consequence of doing good business. But what we are seeing these days is everythign is being manipulated so as to achieve higher quarterly share prices.  A huge amount of research has gone into actually figuring out how…read more

Total number of books I own: Currently I could imagine I have around 150 – 200 books. Its what I have left from the past 4 or so years. I…read more
